High-Tech, High-Touch, and Manufacturing’s Triple Bottom Line

This article, written by Pratt Center’s Joan Byron and Adam Friedman in MIT’s Innovations journal,  promotes a definition of “Advanced Manufacturing” that derives value from human as well as technological inputs. Cities that serve as hubs of both cultural and technical innovation are likely to grow economies that are sustainable, inclusive, and competitive. The authors provide an overview of manufacturing subsectors in  five large and five mid-sized Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs) defined as “high-value/high-performance”. The high-value/high-performance (HV/HP) rubric takes in account a range of metrics from technologically advanced producer goods to high-end consumer products made by traditional processes. This snapshot of urban manufacturing,concludes opportunities and questions for further research.
